Case Taking in Homeopathy
Homeopathy Case Studies
- A visit to a homeopath can be a different experience than a visit to a regular physician.
Homeopathic doctors spend much more time during initial consultations than conventional doctors spend. - A homeopath does a detailed life analysis to get a complete picture of a person’s general health and lifestyle, based on the physical, mental and emotional levels.
- Some symptoms can be so subtle that the patient is not always completely aware of them, and the doctor must spend time getting to know the patient.
- The initial visit often includes a long questionnaire about a patient’s medical and family history, and then a long interview with the doctor, who prompts the patient with many questions.
- As a guide, your first appointment could take anything up to an hour, with follow up appointments typically lasting 15-30 minutes.
- The homeopathic doctor will use lab tests and an opinion from a specialist as and when required to assess a patient’s general level of health.
6-year-old girl with recurrent cough & cold
I would like to present the case of a 6-year-old girl with a recurrent cough and cold.
She came to my clinic with her mother and sister. Her sister was 4-year-old.
This girl was very irritable at whatever her mother was telling her and used to answer back very rudely compared to her sister who was very well behaved. She was thin built and had a weak constitution. The moment she entered the room, she took off her jacket though it was quite chilling in the room in spite of her mother insisting on wearing it. She was lacking in her studies, was much behind other children. She never used to sit for studying with her mother. There was difficulty in concentrating in her studies. She used to trouble her sister by fighting with her all the time.
The mother was having great difficulty managing her. Her main complaint at physical plain was frequent colds and coughs as narrated by her mother. She used to get frequent attacks of URTI every month. The attack used to start with sneezing, a runny nose, cough followed by a high fever up to 101C. It used to last for 4-5 days. The attack uses to get triggered by anything cold – like cold weather, cold food and drink, and change in weather. She used to feel better by warm drinks.
She had to miss school every time she had an attack and had to take antibiotics.
She was a little shy and introverted. She had a very poor appetite and was very choosy in eating food and was not fond of most of the food items. Thirst was normal and also her cravings, sleep, and dreams.
On further probing into the mother’s pregnancy history, she revealed that she was going through a lot of stress as her husband was out of a job and they were staying with her mother and her mother expected her to help her in her business.
She was not very communicative with anybody and used to keep brooding inside suppressing all her emotions not wanting to upset her husband either.
The mother’s history of suppressed emotions confirmed the diagnosis of the remedy.
After a month, when they came back, she was much better. Both the sisters were sitting quietly and well behaved. Her irritability and anger had reduced significantly. There was an improvement in her studies. She was performing much better in school.
As far as her physical complaints were concerned, she did have an attack of cold and cough but it was less severe, lasted for 4 days and fever went max up to 100 degrees.
She was given a placebo and asked to come back after 1 month.
Gradually, in later visits, her attacks reduced in intensity and duration. Frequency reduced from monthly to bi-monthly then quarterly. Her usage of antibiotics reduced gradually. The remedy was continued for the next few months after all the symptoms came to a standstill.
